Ruth's Biography

Early Musical Life

Ruth has always taken an interest in creating music from a very young age. She began playing the recorder aged 4, learning quickly and being able to pick up and repeat familiar tunes by ear. She won second and first prize playing solo recorder at festivals, in 1997 & 1998.

Throughout School

Ruth excelled in Music during her school life. It wasn't long before Ruth took an interest in the violin, and she was seven years old when her grandparents bought her her very first violin. She began lessons in September 1997, joining the North Lincolnshire 3rd Orchestra within the following academic year.

Her enthusiasm and passion for music & the violin developed when she began Comprehensive school. During this time she took a fascinated interest in Music Theory and began piano lessons to suppliment her understanding. Part of her 'work experience' was spent shadowing Peripatetic Music Teachers; an invaluable experience which gave her a new perspective on the lessons she remembered having as a child. Her two years studying for GCSE Music "were fanstastic"; she was given the encouragement, support and guidance which allowed her musicality to grow. Her appreciation for more types of music started in these two years, and this has now broadened into a passion for a catholic range of styles. Ruth took part in a majority of the school music clubs; orchestra & string band (which she was leader in her final two years at school), choir, windband and chime bars ("a novelty and an honour!"). She also played in the pit orchestra for school productions ('Oliver' and 'The Wizard of Oz') as well as taking part as a chorus member in the school production of 'Grease'; her involvement in the productions sparked an new, exciting interest in theatre.

Alongside her school commitments, Ruth took part in a number of other gigs, concerts & shows with several different orchestras. By Year 9, she was leader of the North Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra - a post which she held for the following five years. She has played for the Isle Studio Sinfonia in Haxey a few times, which she really enjoyed and has played for the Mayor of North Lincolnshire Council's Civic Service at Normanby Park in 2005. She has also played in the pit orchestra for the Scunthorpe Gilbert Sullivan society, and the Scunthorpe Amateur Operatics Society and was cast the part of 'The Fiddler' in their 2006 Production of 'The Fiddler on the Roof'. This involved (among other things) playing her violin atop an eight-foot high shed.

Ruth has always been enthusiastic to be involved and associated with groups and bands, and took every opurtunity to meet and mix with new musicians. She left school as a strong-willed, ambitious musician, having had many wonderful and beautiful violin teachers and music teachers, and looks back at her musical life during her school career as a 'golden era'.

Throughout College

Ruth studied English to A level which she found to be a wonderfully enjoyable and rewarding experience. She also enjoyed the recording & mixing projects as part of her A level Music Tech and believes they demonstrate some of her best work.

During this time, she had singing lessons which she found very useful and had a fantastic singing teacher, who took her to grade 5 standard in one and a half years. During college, she was also inspired to learn the guitar and this has helped her to appreciate and understand music to a much deeper level.

In July 2007, Ruth toured the Blackforest in Germany as leader of the North Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra along with the Youth Concert Band and the Youth Swing Band; an experience she will never forget.

In November 2007, she performed Mozart's Requiem as a 2nd violinist with the 'Cantata Orchestra' and 'Scunthorpe & District Choral Society'; as one of her favourite musical works of all time, this was a true highlight. Ruth played the Beethoven Romance in F at her very last North Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Concert before retiring as leader.

Post-August 2008

Life is a three-way balancing act of work and practice and recording. Ruth loves meeting with other musicians to play for enjoyment, and loves going out to see bands play live. She is enjoying the freedom to experiment with music, and ultimately would like to be part of a group to perform gigs locally.

Ruth and Musical Interests

I like listening to all types of music, depending on the mood I am in - and I always appreciate it when people introduce me to new music. My favourite bands & artists include Keith Urban, Good Charlotte, & Elvis (and in fact, any rock n roll bands). My favourite solo artists include the late, great Nathan Milstein, the great Maksim Mrvica and the great Joe Satriani. And my favourite classical composer is, by far, the late, great W. A. Mozart (1756-1791). I am inspired by lots of wonderful music, I love Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18 in Bb major because I believe it is so painful and so sensitive - and just perfect. These days I also tend to have Smokey Robinson on repeat - that or Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing"; it's nostalgic... even though I know it shouldn't be. I like The Who, I don't know why - I just do. And I like Dream Theater somewhat; Jordan Rudess & John Petrucci make strange and beautiful music as a duo, too. I crave to know everything about music and so I spend my time reading avidly. I read the other day "Music is the language of the heart, the sound of the soul. The more we understand it, the deeper the listening experience." ( - Joe Satriani) which pretty much sums up my aims. I particularly like it when bands add a bar of 2/4 to their 3/4 bar riffs. Thank you Dave Matthews Band.

Ruth and Other Interests

Since knowledge & learning is addictive, I sometimes find myself lost within a hefty English language or Philosophy book - as both subjects fascinate me. When it comes to novels, Stephen King is the King of storytelling. Though I enjoy reading the occasional Peanuts comic strip, or expressing my creativity through the medium of oil pastel or pencil.
